Glove box is a commonly used equipment in scientific research and industrial production, used to provide a water and oxygen free working environment. However, with the long-term use of the glove box, the activity of the adsorption material in the glove box purification column cannot be restored through glove box regeneration. Therefore, it is necessary to promptly contact the glove box manufacturer to replace the adsorption material in the glove box purification column. Improper disposal of discarded purification materials may cause pollution to the environment and even lead to safety accidents, so it is necessary to handle glove box waste purification materials correctly.

The commonly used adsorption materials in the glove box purification column are copper catalyst, molecular sieve, and activated carbon. Copper oxide in copper catalysts will be oxidized and release heat upon contact with air. Activated carbon, due to its porous structure, has a high surface area and can adsorb various substances, including strong volatile organic compounds with low flash points. When these two materials are mixed and in contact with each other, the exothermic reaction of copper catalyst may become an ignition source, while the volatile organic compounds adsorbed by activated carbon act as combustibles, and the meeting of the two can easily cause a fire.

  • Method for handling waste purification materials in glove boxes:

  1. Waste glove box purification materials should be promptly taken away and properly disposed of by the glove box manufacturer. It is strictly prohibited to store them in flammable and melting material containers such as paper, wood, or plastic.

  2. Separate the discarded glove box purification materials and place them in a ventilated and open area without flammable materials. After there is no obvious exothermic reaction (deactivation), they will be collected and treated as hazardous waste.

  3. Slowly add water in batches multiple times, with the water level higher than the waste adsorbent material, and stir at the same time to allow the cuprous oxide in the copper catalyst to fully react with water and dissolved oxygen until there is no obvious exothermic phenomenon and the deactivation is achieved.

  4. The adsorbent material of the deactivated glove box should also be treated according to environmental requirements. Solid materials can be collected as solid waste, while liquids can be collected as alkaline waste and handed over to qualified units for safe disposal.

  • Precautions for handling waste purification materials in glove boxes:

  1. When the purification system of the glove box still cannot achieve good purification performance after regeneration, the glove box manufacturer should be contacted immediately to replace the purification column and adsorption column materials.

  2. The purification materials for discarded glove boxes are generally copper catalysts, molecular sieves, and activated carbon. These materials should be stored separately and mixing is strictly prohibited to prevent chemical reactions from causing fires.

  3. The waste of glove boxes should be stored in fire-resistant buckets or containers made of non flammable materials such as glass or enamel, and warning labels should be affixed.

  4. It is strictly prohibited to place discarded column materials near flammable and explosive chemicals, heat sources, and power sources to prevent fires.

  5. Strengthen the environmental awareness and skill training of laboratory personnel, ensure that each employee can correctly identify and dispose of waste, reduce environmental pollution, and protect the personal safety of laboratory personnel.

By following the above steps, the waste purification materials in the glove box can be disposed of in a reasonable and safe manner, while complying with environmental regulations.
