In the fields of high-tech research and precision manufacturing, glove boxes play a crucial role as highly specialized equipment. It protects samples, materials, or processes that are highly sensitive to air components by creating a sealed and controllable environment. To achieve this goal, glove boxes not only focus on sealing and circulation purification systems in their design, but also widely support the use of various working gases to meet the needs of different experiments and production.

1、 The main working gases supported by the glove box

There are various types of working gases supported by glove boxes, but they can be roughly divided into the following categories based on their functions and application scenarios:

  • Inert gases: such as nitrogen (N ₂), argon (Ar), etc. These gases have stable chemical properties and are not easily reactive with other substances, so they are often used as filling gases in glove boxes to remove oxygen and moisture, protect sensitive samples or processes from oxidation and contamination.

  • Reductive gases: In certain specific situations, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes in semiconductor manufacturing, glove boxes may need to support the use of reducing gases such as hydrogen (H ₂). Hydrogen has strong reducibility and can remove oxides on metal surfaces, promoting the growth of high-quality thin films.

  • Rare gases: such as helium (He), neon (Ne), etc. These gases have unique physical properties under specific conditions, such as extremely low temperatures, and are therefore applied in some high-end scientific research and production fields, such as superconducting material research, semiconductor lithography, etc.

  • Mixed gas: Depending on the specific needs of the experiment or production, the glove box may also support the mixing of multiple gases. For example, in the development of lithium batteries, in order to simulate the performance of the battery under different usage conditions, the glove box may need to provide a mixed gas containing various components such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.

2、 Principles for selecting working gases

When selecting the working gas supported by the glove box, the following principles should be followed:

  • Safety: The primary consideration is the safety of the gas. It is necessary to ensure that the selected gas does not pose a hazard to operators, equipment, or samples within the concentration range inside the glove box.

  • Purity: The purity of the working gas has a direct impact on experimental results or product quality. Therefore, when selecting gases, the required purity level should be determined based on experimental or production needs, and the gas supplier should ensure that they can provide products that meet the standards.

  • Stability: The selected gas should remain stable in the environment inside the glove box and not easily undergo decomposition, polymerization, or other chemical reactions to ensure the continuity and reliability of the experiment or production.

The glove box supports the use of multiple working gases to meet the needs of different experiments and production. When choosing a working gas, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as safety, purity, stability, and economy. With the continuous development and expansion of technology and applications, the types of working gases supported by glove boxes will continue to enrich and improve, providing more comprehensive and efficient solutions for scientific research and production fields.
