With the rapid development of modern technology, lithium metal solid-state batteries, as an efficient and clean energy storage device, have been applied in many fields, from portable electronic devices to new energy vehicles, and even large-scale energy storage systems. The performance of lithium batteries is highly dependent on the quality and stability of their internal materials and components, which are extremely sensitive to moisture and oxygen in the environment. Glove boxes play a crucial role in the development of lithium batteries as a device that can provide precise control of a water and oxygen free environment.

  • Sensitivity of lithium battery materials to water and oxygen

The electrode materials of lithium batteries, such as graphite material for the negative electrode and lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate, ternary materials (nickel cobalt manganese oxide, etc.) for the positive electrode, as well as electrolytes, will undergo a series of adverse reactions when in contact with water or oxygen. Moisture can react with lithium metal or lithium salt to produce substances such as lithium hydroxide, which not only consumes the active lithium source but may also lead to structural damage and performance degradation of electrode materials. Oxygen may oxidize electrode materials, changing their chemical composition and electrochemical properties, such as altering the lattice structure of positive electrode materials, reducing their conductivity and lithium ion diffusion ability. In addition, the side reactions caused by water and oxygen may also produce gases, leading to an increase in internal pressure of the battery and posing a safety hazard, seriously affecting key performance indicators such as capacity, cycle life, and charge discharge efficiency of lithium batteries.

  • Application of glove box in electrode material preparation

1. Raw material processing

In the initial stage of electrode material preparation, various raw materials such as metal oxide powders, lithium salts, etc. need to be accurately weighed and pre treated in a glove box. Due to the sensitivity of these raw materials to water and oxygen, the anhydrous and oxygen free environment of the glove box (usually with a moisture content of less than 1ppm and an oxygen content of less than 1ppm) can effectively prevent the raw materials from absorbing moisture or being oxidized during the weighing process, ensuring the purity of the raw materials and the accuracy of the stoichiometric ratio. For example, in the preparation of lithium iron phosphate cathode materials, accurate ratios of iron source, lithium source, and phosphorus source are the basis for obtaining high-performance materials, and glove boxes provide reliable guarantees for this process.

2. Mixing and sintering

The weighed raw materials are mixed in a glove box, and different raw materials are uniformly mixed using mechanical mixing methods such as ball milling. The subsequent sintering process is usually carried out in a glove box or an inert atmosphere furnace connected to it. During the sintering process, an anhydrous and oxygen free environment helps to form a uniform crystal structure and avoid the generation of impurities. For example, for the sintering of ternary positive electrode materials, appropriate temperature and atmosphere environment in a glove box system can evenly distribute elements such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese in the crystal structure, improving the electrochemical performance of the material.

  • Application of glove box in lithium battery assembly

1. Polar processing

The prepared positive and negative electrode sheets need to be further processed in a glove box before assembly, such as coating with adhesive, drying, and other operations. These operations are carried out in an anhydrous and anaerobic environment to prevent contamination or oxidation of the electrode surface, ensuring the flatness of the electrode and uniform distribution of active substances. For example, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) adhesive coated on the polarizer may undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water and oxygen, affecting its bonding performance. The glove box environment effectively avoids this problem.

2. Battery assembly process

The assembly of batteries, including the process of assembling components such as positive and negative electrodes, separators, and electrolytes into battery cells, is all completed in a glove box. After stacking or winding the polarizer and diaphragm in the designed order, inject a precise amount of electrolyte into the glove box. Electrolytes generally contain lithium salts and organic solvents, which are extremely sensitive to water and oxygen. The glove box ensures that the electrolyte does not come into contact with water and oxygen during the injection process, preventing its decomposition and deterioration, thereby ensuring that the battery can work normally and have good performance.

  • Application of Glove Box in Performance Testing of Lithium Metal Solid State Batteries

Preparation of test samples

Before conducting battery performance tests, such as charge and discharge tests, cycle life tests, rate performance tests, etc., the test samples need to be packaged and connected in a glove box. For button or cylindrical batteries, it is also necessary to operate in a glove box when testing the electrodes to prevent oxidation or contamination of the connection parts and ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test data.

Glove boxes play an important role in various aspects of lithium metal solid-state battery research and development, from electrode material preparation, battery assembly to performance testing. It provides a highly stable and controllable atmosphere free of water and oxygen for the research and development of lithium batteries, effectively avoiding the adverse effects of water and oxygen on lithium battery materials and components, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the research and development process.
