In the fields of scientific research and materials science, glove boxes are a common laboratory equipment used for conducting experimental operations in an environment free of water and oxygen. It is crucial to follow the correct operating procedures in order to ensure the accuracy of the experiment and the safety of the operators. This article will provide a detailed introduction to the operating procedures that need to be followed when the glove box arrives at the laboratory.

  • Preparation before glove box operation

  1. Check equipment integrity: Before starting operation, the integrity of the laboratory glove box should be checked, including the sealing of the glove box, gloves, windows and interfaces.

  2. Confirm gas source: Ensure the supply of inert gases such as nitrogen or argon is normal.

  3. Check the purification system: Confirm that the adsorption function of the purification column is normal.

  4. Prepare experimental materials: Prepare all materials and tools that need to be placed in the glove box in advance.

  5. Personal protection: Operators should wear appropriate lab coats and gloves.

  • Startup of glove box

  1. Turn on the power: Turn on the power to the laboratory glove box and check if the control system is working properly.

  2. Fill with inert gas: Click on the glove box cleaning button, flush in inert gas, and exhaust the original gas inside the glove box until the desired atmosphere is reached.

  3. Open the circulation system: Open the gas circulation in the glove box to reduce the water and oxygen content inside the glove box to below 1PPM.

  • Experimental operation

  1. Item transfer: Transfer items into or out of the laboratory glove box through a transition chamber, ensuring that the atmosphere in the transition chamber is consistent with that inside the glove box each time items are transferred, and maintaining the sealed state of the transition chamber before and after each operation.

  2. Operation process: Strictly follow the glove box safety operation manual to avoid experimental failure or leakage risks caused by daily operational errors.

  3. Data recording: Real time recording of experimental data and conditions, recording of glove box usage and any abnormal situations.

  4. Emergency situation handling: Understand the emergency stop procedure and accident handling process.

  • Maintenance of laboratory glove box

  1. Daily inspection: Check the wear and tear of gloves and the glove box after each operation.

  2. Regeneration: Regularly regenerate the adsorbent in the purification column based on its usage.

  3. System calibration: Regularly calibrate the oxygen analyzer and water analyzer.

  • Closing the laboratory glove box

The laboratory glove box generally does not need to be closed unless it will not be used for a long time. When not in use, ensure sufficient working gas and turn on gas circulation. It can be used directly for the next experiment. Every time the glove box is closed and reopened, it needs to be cleaned, which actually uses more working gas than not closing the glove box.

  • Safety Notice

  1. Adhere to safety regulations: Strictly follow the laboratory's safety operating procedures.

  2. Understand material properties: Understand the chemical properties and potential risks of all materials used in glove boxes.

  3. Emergency equipment: Ensure that the laboratory is equipped with emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, etc.

  4. Training: Operators should receive corresponding training.

By following the above operating procedures, the effective operation of the laboratory glove box and the smooth progress of experiments can be ensured, while ensuring the safety of operators.
