  • Why can't lithium battery manufacturing do without a glove box?

Lithium battery materials have three fears: fear of oxygen, fear of moisture, and fear of pollution.


  1. Afraid of oxygen: The positive electrode materials of lithium batteries, such as ternary lithium and lithium cobalt oxide, have relatively active chemical properties and react when they come into contact with oxygen. This process is similar to metal rusting, where oxygen gradually erodes the structure of the positive electrode material, causing changes in its internal atomic arrangement and chemical composition, resulting in a decrease in the electrochemical reaction efficiency inside the lithium battery. As a result, the amount of electricity that the lithium battery can store and release during charging and discharging decreases, which is what we call a decrease in the capacity of the lithium battery. This seriously affects the overall performance and endurance of the battery.


  2. Fear of moisture: The carrier for ion transport in lithium batteries is the electrolyte, which contains organic solvents and lithium salts. Moisture can cause the lithium salts in the electrolyte to hydrolyze, producing corrosive substances such as hydrofluoric acid. These substances will slowly corrode the electrodes and other components inside the lithium battery. Over time, the resistance inside the lithium battery gradually increases, the charging and discharging efficiency decreases, and the service life of the lithium battery is shortened as a result. What is even more dangerous is that the metal lithium negative electrode has high chemical activity, and it will undergo a violent chemical reaction when it comes into contact with water, releasing a large amount of hydrogen gas and generating extremely high heat. In the limited space of lithium batteries, it is extremely easy to cause fires, seriously threatening the personal safety and equipment safety of users.


  3. Afraid of pollution: The cleanliness requirements for the environment inside lithium batteries are almost strict, and even tiny dust particles or other impurities mixed in can cause serious consequences. Because dust and impurities are mostly conductive, when they enter a lithium battery, they may form an unexpected conductive path between the positive and negative electrodes, causing a local short circuit in the battery. Once a short circuit occurs, the current inside the battery will instantly increase, generating a large amount of heat, accelerating the aging and damage of the internal materials of the battery, and in severe cases, it may cause thermal runaway, leading to the ignition and combustion of the lithium battery.

  • How can glove boxes solve these problems?

The glove box solves the problem of positive electrode materials being afraid of oxygen and moisture by constructing a sealed space isolated from the outside air, filling it with inert gas, and purifying the gas inside the box through infinite circulation.


Glove boxes are generally made of stainless steel as the box material, which is durable and does not deform; Seamless welding eliminates splicing gaps, and the sealing structure includes multiple sealing strips and sealed glove interfaces, creating a space isolated from the outside and preventing oxygen and moisture from seeping into the glove box from the outside.


Inside the glove box, inert gases such as argon and nitrogen will be filled. These inert gases have stable chemical properties and hardly react with other substances. In this way, positive electrode materials such as ternary lithium and lithium cobalt oxide will not come into contact with oxidizing oxygen during processing, storage, or assembly in a glove box, avoiding the "rusting and deterioration" reaction similar to metal rusting, ensuring the stability of the internal electrochemical reaction efficiency of lithium batteries, maintaining the normal capacity, overall performance, and endurance of lithium batteries.


The circulation purification system of the glove box can continuously circulate and filter the gas inside the box, purify the water and oxygen in it, and maintain the water and oxygen content in the box<1ppm. This also prevents the electrolyte from coming into contact with water inside the glove box, thereby preventing the hydrolysis of lithium salts to produce corrosive hydrofluoric acid and other substances, effectively protecting the electrodes and internal components of lithium batteries from corrosion and extending the service life of lithium batteries.


The high-efficiency filter (HEPA) and other equipment in the glove box can filter out small dust particles in the gas, which makes it almost impossible for dust or impurities to enter the interior of lithium batteries during research and development or production.


Glove boxes can integrate coating, packaging and other equipment to achieve one-stop production from materials to batteries. Glove boxes are not simply "boxes", but the infrastructure for lithium battery manufacturing: for lithium battery production, they are safety guards to prevent material deterioration and explosion risks; For lithium battery research and development, it is a breeding ground for innovation, driving breakthroughs in high-energy density batteries; Every automated production line for lithium metal batteries has the shadow of glove boxes.
