In modern laboratories and industrial production, high-purity inert gas glove boxes are widely used in cutting-edge fields such as lithium battery research and development, semiconductor material processing, and nuclear energy applications.

As the core medium for operators to interact with the environment inside the box, gloves are often the most vulnerable parts to mechanical wear and chemical aging. If improper maintenance leads to micro-leakage, external water and oxygen will seep into the chamber, not only disrupting the experimental environment but also accelerating the consumption of copper catalyst and molecular sieves in the purification column. So how should gloves be maintained on a daily basis?

I. Cleaning and Drying After Daily Use

After each use, promptly clean any residue from the glove surface. Avoid using corrosive solvents such as acetone and strong acids. It is recommended to gently wipe the inner and outer surfaces with a lint-free cloth dampened with a neutral detergent, then blot dry with a clean cloth. Pay special attention to the creases between the fingers and cuffs—these areas are prone to accumulating trace amounts of moisture or particles, which may accelerate rubber aging over time.

II. Weekly Comprehensive Inspection

1. Visual Inspection: Under sufficient light, inflate the gloves to a slightly bulging state and observe for fine cracks, bubbles, or areas of thinning. Pay particular attention to frequently bent joints and the vicinity of the glove's sealing ring.

2. Airtightness Verification: Seal the glove opening and set the chamber pressure to +10 mbar using the pressure controller. Record the time it takes for the pressure to naturally drop to 0. If the pressure drop rate is >3 mbar/minute, a minor leak may exist.

III. Operating Habits to Extend Glove Life

1. Avoid Overload Stress: Butyl rubber has limited puncture resistance. When transferring sharp tools, use a tray and never drag them directly. An optional built-in stainless steel shelf can be used as a cushioning platform.

2. Control Pressure Fluctuations: The system automatically maintains a ±12mbar protection range, but frequent manual rapid pressurization/depressurization will exacerbate rubber fatigue. It is recommended to adjust slowly using a foot switch, with a single pressure change not exceeding 5mbar.

3. Prevent Ozone Aging: The glove box should be kept away from corona discharge equipment. The UV sterilization lamp should be shielded from the gloves, or operated after the machine is turned off.

4. Regularly Rotate Gloves: For double-station or long glove boxes, the left and right gloves can be rotated monthly to ensure even wear on stress-bearing parts.

IV. Handling Special Cases

1. Mild Adhesion: If the inner surface adheres due to long-term disuse, do not forcibly pull it apart. First, purge with dry inert gas for 5 minutes, then gently push to separate the gloves from the inside of the opening.

2. Emergency Repair of Minor Damage: While temporary repairs can be made with butyl rubber patch and room-temperature vulcanizing adhesive, replacing the gloves is a more reliable option—butyl gloves are typically recommended for replacement every 12-18 months, or immediately if visibly hardened/sticky.

Ⅴ.Summary

The gloves in a vacuum glove box are like the "lips of the system," their integrity directly determining the limits of the internal environment. Through daily cleaning, weekly airtightness checks, and cultivating gentle handling habits, a pair of compliant butyl rubber gloves can safely serve for over two years.
